The impact of BREXIT on the UK Ports
In the past five years, we have seen the UK’s share of European container handling decline as the number of direct deep sea services calling in the UK has decreased. In addition, Brexit has negatively impacted intra-European trade flows.
Unfortunately also the new trade deal with the European Union did not have a positive effect. Approximately 26% of trucks traveling to the EU from the UK in January were doing so with their trailers empty, reported by the Road Haulage Association (RHA). The port most affected by the decline in trailer traffic volumes is Dover.
Fortunately, not everything looks as bleak as one might think. Due to the new Freeport legislation and increasing opportunities and investment in the green energy sectors, the UK ports are still optimistic.
