Rising gross profit for Hapag

With a virtually unchanged transport volume, Hapag-Lloyd managed to increase its gross profit to 9,4 billions euro’s. This is more than 7 times as much as last year.

With the current numbers in mind, the shipping company calls the significantly improved freight rates as a result of very strong demand for goods from Asia” as a major cause of the increased gross profit. But on the other side, according to Hapag, there is a significant increase in transport costs, because of the supply chains disruptions.

It reported two weeks ago in an interim report that the profit of Danish competitor Maersk before interest charges and taxes for last year will probably be just under twenty billion dollars. That is ‘only’ almost five times as much as in 2020. So Hapag-Lloyd have performed relatively better than its Danish competitor, they were the world’s largest container shipping company by the end of last year.

Rising price of TEU

The total transported TEU last year was 11,9 million. This was almost 100,000 more than they transported back in 2020. The carrier received an average of USD 2.003,00 per TEU.

This is more than USD 889,00 compared to last year, percentage wise almost 80%.

Sales volume increased by more than 78% to 22.3 billion Euros due to these much higher rates. On March 10, Hapag will publish its annual report with the final figures.

Danish competitor Maersk will do this next Wednesday.
