One in five container ships suffers from congestion
More than 1800 CONTAINER SHIPS are WAITING for handling. Last week, about a fifth of the global container fleet at sea was waiting for handling at ports of call. This is reported by Windward, the Israeli leading predictive intelligence company. In the middle of this month, the agency counted 1,826 container ships that were forced to wait until they could enter. More than 500 of these were at the entrance of Chinese ports.
Windward notes that the lockdowns of the Chinese ports of Shanghai and Shenzhen have greatly exacerbated the global congestion problem. Two months earlier, in mid-February, there were ‘only’ 260 ships waiting at the entrance of Chinese ports, according to the agency. The Danish Sea-Intelligence then reported the first improvement in punctuality in two years. In February, Sea-Intelligence said reliability appeared to be returning to its highest level since mid-2021.
With the lockdowns we now again face a decline in the reliability of container shipping.
