Number of shipping accidents in inland shipping decreased again

The number of accidents in Dutch inland shipping has decreased for the third year in a row, Rijkswaterstaat reports. The number of serious accidents has also decreased compared to 2020.

Accidents increased in the North Sea. In 2020, 31 incidents were registered, in 2021 there were 42. The increase is in line with the trend of recent years.

There are several initiatives from the government to further reduce the number of accidents. In recent years, for example, more attention has been paid to the separation of professional and recreational shipping. In addition, the government developed the Vaar Melder app, where waterway users can report dangerous sailing behaviour or overdue maintenance of the waterways.
