Hapag-Lloyd moves partly to JWP Wilhelmshaven
The carrier Hapag-Lloyd will move at least one Asia service from Hamburg to JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven. This was announced at the end of May.
The move will most likely have knock-on effects on calls at Rotterdam. One of the reasons for the move is that the carrier has on order from DSME six 23,500 TEU dual-fuel ships. The only port in Germany that accept these vessels at full intake is Wilhelmshaven.
The move can cause a boost for the JadeWeserPort. This port is not a busy one. It handled just 640,000 TEU in 2019, which was pre-pandemic. The port’s capacity is 2.7M TEU a year. There are talks that Maersk will leave JadeWeserPort, so Hapag-Lloyd will be a good replacement.
