DP World has initiated construction of its planned fourth berth for its London Gateway terminal. With the construction of the new berth, the capacity will grow by about a third.

The Dubai-based group has given the green light for the $390 million investment in the new facility, which is due to be completed in 2024. The project is part of a $1.1 billion investment program over the next ten years in the United Kingdom. Last September, the terminal operator was still talking about an investment of 300 million.

According to CEO Ernst Schulze, the construction of the new fourth berth will create a thousand new jobs. In combination with the planned expansion of the London Gateway logistics park, he believes that about 12,000 people will be employed in about five years.

The container terminal has recently handled its ten millionth container since it opened in 2014 and handled 1.8 million TEU last year.
