CMA CGM opposes French supertax plan

WINDFALL TAX

CMA CGM opposes a plan by the French government for a super tax, a so-called windfall tax, which should skim the profits of successful French companies and then use the money raised to support French households that are hit hard by inflation.

The French government wants to tax the profits of well-farming transport and energy companies, led by CMA CGM and TotalEnergies, by up to 25%. CMA CGM CEO Rodolphe Saadé gave an appearance on Wednesday at a hearing of the French parliament to argue against the plans.

Three weeks ago, after a call from the Minister of Finance, CMA CGM already promised to lower the container rates for French import containers in favour of the French people as of August 1, and according to him, we must first wait and see whether that measure has any effect. According to Saadé, with a super tax the French government would put the French transport company at a disadvantage compared to foreign competitors and in the long run cut itself in the fingers.
