China puts autonomous container ship into service

China claims a first with the first autonomously sailing, electric container ship. After a year of testing, the vessel was put into commercial use. The ‘Zhi Fei’ has a capacity of 300 TEU.
The container ship operates a scheduled service between the ports of Qingdao and Dongjiakou. The ship is 110 meters long, 15 meters wide, 10 meters deep and has a maximum speed of 12 knots. The ‘Zhi Fei’, which translates as ‘flying wisdom’, can sail both manned and unmanned and can also be controlled remotely.
The design comes from Bestway in collaboration with the Shanghai Jiahao Ship Design Institute and Dalian Maritime University. The ship started sea trials in April last year. According to the Chinese authorities, the ‘Zhi Fei’ is a pilot, in the future more container ships should sail autonomously.
